So here it is everyone, the Steve Martin monologue that was a tribute to Gilda Radner. She had died that afternoon, the same day as the season finale. While Steve is presenting the “Dancing in the Dark” sketch (from the Steve Martin/Blues Brothers episode) he’s trying to hold back tears. This was just an unforgettable SNL moment that crushes your heart when you watch it.

I’m bringing this back because today is May 20th. On this day 24 years ago, we lost Gilda Radner.

This week I quit my incredibly stable job as a live-in nanny. A job that has given me a place to live, food to eat, hours to write and a family as close as my own. It was a job that brought me to LA to pursue comedy writing and helped me find some footing in this industry. A job I’m leaving with nothing waiting for me but an open room in Los Feliz and a rent check waving to me every month.

The resounding why you’re hearing in your head is answered only by me telling you that I needed to add weight to the statements “yeah I’m looking for a new job” and “oh I’m a writer but I watch kids but if anything else is out there…” I needed to make myself uncomfortable. I needed to step out with nothing ahead of me and see where I fall, because I know I will fall but I need to experience the depth of that.

Tonight was the series finale of The Office. A show I watched with envy in college and would often wonder how the writers did it. A show I could never have imagined being able to actually meet and shake the hands of some of those writers and hear them talk about their process and the room they were in daily. A room I gave up living near my family and friends for. A room I probably sacrificed a potential husband to because it was calling me so loudly it muted my drive to settle down early.

When I quit earlier this week I was flooded with relief but not without doubt. I have some money saved but what’s next? Staffing season will draw to a close and where will that leave me? Right now, I can’t even tell you my next move other than figuring it out as I go along. But watching that finale and seeing the actors shed real tears through their “character’s” eyes just further solidifies my decision to move here and pursue creating story over creating a family this young in life. Because 26 is still young, whether your Aunt Holly tells you it is or not.

Also today my parents sold the house they brought me home in. A home I’ll never go back to. The Office ended, I quit my job. Things just have to end. I hate endings. But stuff just has to go to make way for other things. That’s so cliche but it’s just how we move on to the next thing. The greater thing. The thing.

Quitting is a bitch, but being too comfortable in a situation you know isn’t what’s right is worse.
